Healing Hips: NWH Helps Area Therapist With Treatment Of His Own

Having been a physical therapist in Mount Kisco for over 30 years, Jim Watts has seen countless patients use Northern Westchester Hospital to treat everything, from breaks and strains to ailments requiring complex surgical procedures. That's why when a nagging hip pain began to seriously impact his quality of life, he turned to the neighborhood hospital to help him regain his health.

"I’ve seen a lot of hip replacements," said Watts. "One of the reasons I decided to choose Northern Westchester Hospital is because I see a lot of people who’ve had hip surgery in New York City and in Westchester, and the feedback is universally positive from Northern Westchester Hospital."

After suffering from acute pain for more than a year, and despite using anti-inflammatory drugs and even undergoing a steroid injection to help overcome the discomfort, Watts knew he had to tackle his hip problem head-on.

"I decided to do the anterior approach to hip replacement surgery as opposed to the posterior approach for a couple of reasons," he said. "Most notably for the fact that with this type of procedure, you don’t have restrictions in your movement patterns."

After meeting with Dr. Eric Grossman, Director of Joint Replacement Surgery, Orthopedic and Spine Institute at Northern Westchester Hospital, Watts underwent the anterior hip surgery and was living a pain-free life just days after the procedure.

Today, Watts is back to helping Westchester residents return to their own active lives, just as the NWH team did for him. "The experience I had [at NWH] was fantastic," he said. "The outcome was great and my stay here at Northern Westchester Hospital was an overwhelmingly positive experience. The nursing staff was so friendly, very attentive, and I just can’t thank them enough."
